Dec 2023
Farmer Kelvis supported the first round of Restore Projects as a TAP and found the results she witnessed to be so compelling, she has decided to apply the principles on her own farm as one of this year’s grantees.
Kelvis’ farm has been in operation for over four years, and while it doesn’t face terrain issues such as drainage, it has experienced challenges regarding crop and soil health. Following the advice of our soil expert advisor, Kelvis immediately began applying compost, mushroom substrate, compost tea, and nutrient amendments.
Corn plot preparation with Jiangxi compost (tested by our soil expert consultant) and horn meal mixed in (natural organic source of nitrogen), with mushroom substrate as final cover.
Some crops under transitioning fields are still showing signs of chlorosis and discoloration which is usually a result of nutrient deficiency. Kelvis will begin to apply nutrient amendments and compost tea more rigorously to address the problem.
Fish hydrolysate is a nutrient amendment that combines ingredients including compost, water, molasses, grain bran and fish which is then pumped with oxygen overnight to “ferment”. Its application will greatly help to achieve the ideal fungal bacterial ratio for crops growth. However, since this particular nutrient amendment typically takes several months to mature, the farm has been making and applying compost tea on almost a daily basis.
Various types of nutrients amendments were made, including fish hydrolysate and one focused on almond pulps.
This strawberry variety from Shandong (妙香7號) was immensely popular last year, and Kelvis decided to grow more with regenerative practices.
In contrast to healthy soil, which is dark brown in colour, we can see that the soil beneath this tomato plant is quite sandy and pale looking.
Kelvis is planning to transform this plot through implementing regenerative practices, which will allow biodiversity to thrive and healthier crops to grow.
